Default Annoying metal rubbing noise

Please help me out- I have no idea what is causing this sound. When I start the car the sound seems the worst. It is like a metal scraping/rubbing against metal sound and it is present in neutral while the car is still as well as all the time I think in any gear or speed. The sound seems to be coming from the area of the tranny, but I can't be sure- besides, nothing is moving around while I'm in neutral, right?

This has been going on for a few weeks and seems to be getting worse but I don't think it is affecting performance (yet).

2000 V6 man trans

thanks for any insight

Being a manual trans, my first suspect would be the throwout/release bearing. Does the sound change at all when you push down the clutch pedal?
Something we can't do from here is get under your car to lend an ear, you're going to have to do that one.

being it makes noise worse when starter is engaged, also check starter to make sure its not hitting/rubbing the flywheel.

I checked and no, sound is unaffected by clutch depress. I'm thinking it must be a lower engine component/bearing but not sure where to start- ....it does still sound like it is coming from the area of the tranny. It is an intermittent sound. kkkk....kkkk.....kk.....kkkkkkk...
