Default Rattling metal noise, something to do with a/c?

Whenever my air conditioner is off, I get a noise from under the hood that sounds like chains or something metal rattling. Sometimes it gets really loud, and starting just about a week ago, whenever I turn on my defroster, the car stalls and won't start back up until I turn the a/c and defroster off. When it does start back up, it makes a very loud rattling and clunking noise and I have to stay on the gas or else it will stall again. Any idea what this could be? I've checked under the hood and see no loose belts or anything that looks out of place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

your A/C compressor is about to lock up. Try not to use heat or A/C till you can have it checked out. Same thing happen to a friends truck and it left him stranded when it finaly locked up. Sorry for the bad news

mine does the same rattle but i just leave the a/c off, the heater works though. My car doesnt stall though its just the front plate of the a/c compressor that rattles on the pulley

Mine has a aux belt to run a/c only so it your is same you may be able to remove it but not sure if heat would work correct. As it stalls car it is prob on its way out. if you use a/c a lot look at getting a neew compressor

Yep, just took it to a shop and they confirmed that the compressor won't even spin. Since I don't use a/c too much, I'm just taking off the belt. I hear on the LS1s that I can take that off without having to buy anything new. I'll take a look tomorrow morning to see what I can find.

You can take off the belt and everything will be o.k. except your defrost wont work as well. The a/c compressor helps remove moisture from the heat/defrost system.
