So I've been trying to track down a drive line vibration and I think I found it. I'm pretty sure the output shaft isn't supposed to move quite this much...

And since I was under there, decided to do the trans fluid. Not as bad as last time I did it so I do believe the cooler has helped buy some time but I didn't like finding this. Guess it's time for a new trans.

So I read you're actually supposed to leave the yoke in when checking the play. In any case, I crawled back under it after reinstalling everything and there is still a good amount of play. U-joint is tight since it was replaced when I had everything apart.

As far as what's on the paper towel, your guess is as good as mine, but it was laying in the bottom of the pan (you can see some of it in the pic I took). Looks like I'll be buying the built 700r4 my uncle has in his garage.

How much is a little play? I can't think of anything else that can cause the vibration. The u-joints are new and centered. The tires and wheels were balanced three times. I can try swapping wheels from the other car and see if it changes, but iirc, it did it with those wheels and tires too.

I forget to mention there is dent, maybe the size of a dime, in the drive shaft near the trans yoke. I am thinking that when the u-joint let loose some months ago, it ruined the tailshaft bushing (if mine even has one), put something in the rear end out of whack or did something to the driveshaft. Again though, I don't remember if I swapped rears before or after the u-joint failure, but I'm thinking before.

I really want to get this figured out so I can take it to the track and not have to worry about the driveshaft launching through the floor board. I may just order a new aluminum drive shaft and get my a** on building that 8.5.

Edit: Going back through my posts it seems it developed the drive line vibration after I replaced the rear but before the u-joint destroyed itself so now I am wondering A) Are these drive line vibrations because of the same issue and the u-joint destroying itself an unrelated incident. B) Did the u-joint incident cause both vibrations. I am leaning towards the rear end being any issue. I could swap back in the old 2.73 rear and see if it's still there. If it is, I found the problem. If it isn't, I just wasted a lot of bloody time.

if it hit the shaft hard enough to dent it you most likely bent it a little. by chance do you have a poly trans mount?

if you pull the driveshaft pull the tail off the trans and see if it even has a tailshaft bushing. mine doesnt. i think thats why mine moves as it does
