When a 700R4 is built with the intention of using a non-lockup converter, the pump is modified by removing the stock lockup valve and springs, re-tapping the hole, and installing a non-lockup valve. There is also a check ball and capsule on the end of the input shaft that gets removed. You can't simply slap a lockup converter back on, it won't work. If the price was right though, I'd consider it. Without lockup, the trans will run a little hotter, so you might want to add an auxiliary cooler. Plus engine rpm's will be about a couple hundred higher in 4th than if it was locked up. But, how much time do you spend in 4th on the highway? That's the only time to be concerned about wanting to have a lockup.

My thoughts exactly. But I don't think this is the original transmission. The ID tag that's supposed to be on the pain rail is smooth and I guess they grind them off when transmissions are reman'd. As far as fitting it should. From what I read, other than a few year to year changes, the 700r4 didn't change in physical size.

The only reason I think this is a non-lock up is it is missing this plug in.

It's coming with a torque converter, but like I said, Idk the stall on it. He built this many years ago and had it in his '57 Bel Air but didn't like it so he swapped back to a stick. I just don't want it to be a lower stall speed than the torque converter I have now. I can go higher, but I do not want to go lower. Already have the aux cooler...which is why I'm surprised the fluid got burned but I guess the coolers can only do so much if the trans is slipping.

I drive the car about 15 miles one way to work a few days week, I hit 1 traffic light and two stop signs the whole way. He'll let the trans go for $400. I'd rather have the lock up...but I'm sure I can live without it.

Two torque converters I can stick back in it. Left is the one out of my car, 2800 stall w/lock up. Right, unknown stall, was behind my uncles 454 BB...he honestly doesn't remember if it's a lock up or not..though I doubt it. I'm gonna pull the pan when I feel like it to see if any of the lock up stuff is there. Could I use my torque converter even though I would no long have the lock up function?

So I took a 50/50 shot on the torque converter and stuck the one that came with the new trans in it.

I'm scared now. I don't know if the old trans was just that worn out and or this new converter is making that much of a difference but the car is noticeably faster...I mean really noticeable. First pull I did from a stop in first gear lifted the front of the car..not enough the tires left the ground, but you could physically watch the front lift as you were going, it lifted a wee little bit before but you had to be watching for it, now you see it plain as day. And yes, I will get a video!.....also my drive line vibration is gone and I ordered the aluminum factory shaft.

So tore the old trans apart the other night. Not as hard as I thought it would be. Tore everything down, laid it out as I pulled the parts. 3-4 clutch pack, Low/reverse clutch pack, and reverse input clutch were all worn, but okay. The rollers for low/reverse roller bearing came out of the cage. So I thought, hey I found the problem! Maybe part of the problem, but needless to say, when I pulled the forward gear/overrun clutch pack apart, I found the major problem and I'll let the pics do the talking.

So I lied about that vibration being gone. You get up to 55 or so and it'd have slight shake. Sooooo, I finally got around to getting the aluminum drive shaft that's been laying in the back seat for like a year installed. Vibration gone and less rotating weight too. Now I just gotta get my *** on getting that rear end done and fix the trans pan leak and build a solid roller 396
