1996 Camaro Z28 Project Thread
so I came across this SLP cold air intake:

I already have a cold air intake on my car, but I think this one looks a TON better. I think it will dress up the engine bay quite nicely. The guy wants $160, but I think I'm going to offer him $140. What do you guys think? I could probably sell the one I have for at least $100.
Also, some input about how to control my problem with the headers would be appreciated.

so yeah, just got a call from my dad, who took my car to a transmission shop last week. Turns out that the clutches and stuff are all burned out, and I'm gonna need a rebuild. I just paid $700 for that transmission in March. FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I think as long as long as it's getting rebuilt, I'm gonna make sure it gets done how I need it to be. My goal is at least 300 hp at the wheels, meaning roughly 350 or so hp at the crank, so I need to be sure it can take it. I think this is also the ideal time to get a 3200-3400 converter, as long as the trans is out anyway.

the guy from the trans shop told me that if I do a 3200 or so stall converter without 3.73 or 4.10 gears, it's gonna heat way up and boil the fluid, not to mention it's never gonna kick in. I'm pretty sure I have 3.23s, not positive. I'd never heard of this rule with a stall converter and gears. I really don't know transmissions very well, so is there anyone else out there that can give me some input?
with a stall the high the motor will have to be revving up to 3400rpms for the converter to kick in. that means you will be slipping untill then. without a high ratio rearend the motor will not reach that rpm level except in a race situation unless you drive in 3rd and are going 120mph. for street/stip i have a 2000 stall.

3200 Stall converter on a stock setup is asking for trouble. You should have a posi rear. To the best of my knowledge all Zs have posi.
I have no problem buying used rears and used motors because I can tear the the covers off and see how the car was maintained. Since pulling the pan on a tranny and cleaning it is part of the normal maintenance you have no idea what was cleaned out of there. Mileage does not mean much cause intown driving is so much harder then highway and if it was a kid forget about it. A lot of times these used trannies sit on the self unused for awhile. With an older tranny that can be very hard on the seals. I have helped friend install used trannies I would guess 25% had problems within two weeks of the install.

well apparently that transmission had only sat for a couple of months. oh well, can't do anything about it now.
so will 3.23 posi gears, 3200 stall, auxiliary trans cooler work or not? it seems everybody here says no, but everybody else that I've spoken to (who have stall converters) say that the shop is full of it.

well I just got off the phone with another trans place (this is actually a guy I trust for a change)...he gave me a lot of info. He was 100% against that tall of a stall converter on the street. He recommended a Corvette torque converter, which stalls around 2k. For a street car, he said I'd be best off with no more than 2500. Also, I never mentioned here that I would like to do some occasional autocross as well, so wouldn't a high converter hurt me for that? This is going to be a street car mostly, with occasional trips to the autocross course and to the strip. Also, I'd like to still get a good 25 mpg on the highway (this is my summer DD), and the guy I just talked to today said that would be impossible with a 3400 stall. Thoughts?

If you know how to drive autocross the stall converter is not going to give you much. YOu want to shift and keep your RPMs in the power band and never let the rpms down that low. Have you driven a car with a 3200 stall converter? Great for a launch at the track sucks on the road. In normal mellow get good gas mileage type driving your RPMs should not go over 2500.
