got tach...what rpm for shift light?

if u r on the street just let the automatic do the work but if u r lookin for a little better ET manualy shifting an auto is good. it depends if u have anything done to the motor if its stock you shouldnt let the rpms get too hight 5,500 to be safe since the 305 is making peak hp at that rpm there is no reason to let ur engine rev up any higher. but if u have a couple things on the motor such as a cam heads or intake it could really change the rpm band. is it stock?
When you shift an auto from 1 to 2, it doesn't shift the transmission into second gear. It allows the transmission to shift into second gear, what this means is that the transmission will shift when it's good and ready to shift, and the only thing you're doing is over-revving your engine and stressing your lower gears.
Furthermore, s stock 305 makes its peak power at 4400 rpm, not 5500.

i second the previous post. i ran 3 tenths slower at the track when i shifted manually. i just kept it in 1st during burnout and stage, then pushed it to drive at 20 mph. it ran 15.204 @ 92.24 shifting auto and 15.523 @ 88.32 shifting manually at 5300-5500. stock 305 tpi, no muffler, air box mod, and 2 dead cylinders.
as for your tach, it sounds like its setup for a v6. check the instructions with the tach and set it to run for a v8
