Why shift an automatic? Just let it do its job.

+1. Shifting an auto manually can be bad due to the changed shift points on what im sure is a high mileage transmission. May or may not have problems, but thats IMHO. Now my Z, my 700R4 is completely built, with a B&M ratchet shifter. I can shift it manually all day long.

unless you have a built motor and trans with a manual valve body, there is no need to manually shift the 700r4. its only going to lead to more problems.

700R4 doesn't have a vacuum line. He was having problems with his TV cable.
1989_Rallysport, I recommend you don't drive around without the TV cable operating correctly.
That cable controls fluid pressures in the trans. Driving with it disconnected can burn up the trans.

if u r on the street just let the automatic do the work but if u r lookin for a little better ET manualy shifting an auto is good. it depends if u have anything done to the motor if its stock you shouldnt let the rpms get too hight 5,500 to be safe since the 305 is making peak hp at that rpm there is no reason to let ur engine rev up any higher. but if u have a couple things on the motor such as a cam heads or intake it could really change the rpm band. is it stock?

also things like a cheap shift kit or a ratchet shifter like jr. machanic has can really help n make it easier to shift it.

well....

fixed the tv cable and when i matt the gas off the line my aftermarket tach says im shifting at around 7000 rpms and sometimes more

odd thing is the higher the rpm on the stock tach like say 3k rpms the after market reads 4000 but at idle stock reads 750-1000 and aftermarket reads 1000-1500rpms i have it hooked to the white wire coming from the dist to the coil do i need to disconnect stock tach?

and according to my aftermarket tach when im on the expressway and i go to pass and floor it it kicks down and if i hold the gas for a bit i peak at 8500rpms before it shifts

these rpms seem a little high for a 305 motor especially since redline is at what 5k on the stock and max is 7k
