Engine trouble/ question
So my engine is tapping again..exactly what killed my last engine. Is it normal to have to adjust lifters occasionally? I have about 7000 miles on this engine. And can running this engine with straight pipes and the timing off make my motor does this? It's fixed now but could that of been it? I understand on an engine with roller rockers and aluminum heads and everything but I have a crate motor from summit and it's just a run of the mill 350 all stone stock. So how do I fix it?
Not unusual to have to adjust lifters after breakin, as that's when most of the initial wear occurs. Were the lifters adjusted when you first started or installed the engine? Once you've finished breakin, then one adkust should last a very long time if done properly, and you have hydraulic lifters. Solids will require adjustment more often.
Alright thanks, the motor came completly assembled minus an intake, fuel pump, etc. I'm just going to get my brother to look at it I guess. What's the proper way of adjusting them? If it's just one should I adjust them all or just that one? Thanks a lot guys.
I'm pretty sure the only thing that had to be adjusted when the motor was put in was the timing and the carb so I guess it's not unusual for this to happen. And I mean I do get on it from time to time bur I sure so not rag on my car and I just hope it's not going to do what it did last time. Last time they had to adjust it so much that my cam live basically just rounded out..
worst thing is ... if you need to tighten your ajustment , your cam has worn.
if you need to keep re-ajusting. that's a tell tale for a fast wearing cam. check your oil for excessive fillings.
if so .
suspect bad break in or just not enought lub at start up.
did you prime the oil pump before firing?
it could be a bad cam. i heard of a bunch of guys having bad cams. but never seen one.

So I got it fixed it just needed to be adjusted a little. The majority of the noise was coming from my header gasket. So I replaced both of them and bow it sounds great again. Guess I was just paranoid
lol,
i don't know how many times i've seen that!
never think to ask if it's leaking. hope you got a real good set! darn hearders seem to warp soo much from the heat cycles that they blow them out in no time. top and bottom
