Are the heads off the engine? No reason why that wouldn't work either way. I usually remove the valves by supporting the valve underneath, hold a deep well socket of the right size over the spring cap, give it a quick rap with a hammer, and the keepers would pop out.

Yeah the heads are off of the engine, so i just put the head on the bench then put the deep socket over the cap and hit it with a hammer?

Yeah, and try to hit the socket, not your hand! Put a block of wood under the valve you're working on to hold it up.

You can buy a handle bar spring remover for like around 10 bucks. You can get the ones that screw down on the valve (if the heads are installed) for about 20 bucks.
