weird noises from rear end. winding down
So i have a 1979 base Camaro and whenever I slow down i hear a whirling/winding down noise, doesn't matter the speed but at higher speeds it's more notable but it's always present. Any ideas?
Rear gear whine perhaps. Have you checked the oil level in the rearend? Some aftermarket gears whine by nature, so it could also be that if a previous owner did a gear swap. This of course is assuming it's a gear whine you're hearing, but I can't hear it from here!
In my line of work, we call it "coast howl" as the bearings wear, the relationship (alignment) between the ring gear and pinion gear changes, causing the noise you're hearing. As with 69, I can't hear it either. If you know the rearends history, it would be helpful. Backing up 69's statement, I have had some gearsets set up perfectly and still make noise.
It something i should be really concerned about? I'm assuming the rear end is totally stock and never needed with. I'm doing the rear leaf springs and was wondering if I should do the bearings at the same time and maybe install posi and different gears.
