Default Carb question Clearance Issues.

Hello,

Just bought a 74 with a 250 I6.

I'm planning on swapping the engine next summer, but want to drive it as is until then, so I've started fixing what needs to be fixed.

The previous owner installed an aftermarket Carb that's too big to fit the stock filter assembly. So what they did was cut out big parts of the bottom so that it can fit. The problem is, the cut out parts let a bunch of air in without going through the filter.

I tried to install an aftermarket 2" tall filter assembly, but I can't close my hood.

Any ideas on what I can do? I'd rather not change the carb since I don't want to invest that much into the current setup. Any super low profile assembly I could use?

Thanks!

You can try to flip the bottom over. You may have to pound some clearance into it to make it fit. You could also take the filter to the parts store and see if you could match it up with a lower paper filter.

I'm going to check out the cone looking filters. Looks like its an extra 2 inches of clearance from the specs.

I've had absolutely no luck with the carb filter, and it will cost too much to get it back to stock so that everything would fit. If I was planning on keeping the I6, then it's worth it, but since I'm planning on putting either a 6.0 Vortec in it next summer, I'm just going to drive it around with the hole in the bottom of the filter housing for now.
