Hi guys,
Thought I had my starting problem fixed on my '67 SS 350 with a power glide but, I just found out that I don't. Occasionally when I turn the key to start it nothing happens. No clicking, no sound at all. Gen. idiot light comes on, as it should, when I turn the key on & all lights work so there is not a battery connection problem. This has happened when engine has been cold or hot. Every time, after it has sat for awhile, it starts. I thought it was the neutral safety switch so I bypassed it & still have the problem. Could it be the ignition switch? The car has a new starter & solenoid & new battery. Sure could use some help.

how mechanically inclined are you?

have you tried jumping the starter when it won't start

 

You might want to do a search on this site and others on this topic. A lot has been written about it. From my reading on the topic, most times its a wiring issue. Somewhere along the line, there is a bad ground or a poor connection.
Another popular cause is that the starter overheats and has to cool down. (Of course, that doesnt really apply to your cold start problem.) This is usually due to the last popular problem, the new/rebuilt starter is of poor quality.

I'm suspecting the ignition switch. It's mounted on top of the steering column, closer to the firewall. It's held on by 2 screws, and has slotted holes, so it could be loose, or is on tight but needs to be slid up a little more, or is just plain bad. Check with a meter the purple start wire on the starter when key is in the start position, any voltage?

 

OK, thanks. I have not tried jumping the starter when having this problem. Will try it next time. Don't think it's a bad started since it was having the same problem before new starter was put in. I'll carry a volt meter in car so next time it happens I can check voltage at starter. Will also try to check wiring & loose connections at switch.

 

Replaced the ignition switch, same problem. I put a push button directly from the starter so when the key doesn't start it I push the button, that is direct to the starter, & it will start every time. I believe it is a wiring problem but no luck finding it.

 

I hear ya on push-button start, had to do this to a couple 1st Gen's.
You might wire in a light bulb to S terminal on solenoid and run inside for viewing.
This light would check power to solenoid.
If dim or dark, you might check firewall connector and maybe pull apart and clean it with a swab and alcohol.
Maybe another test light at purple wire on ign switch ensuring ign switch does work when in START.
