Default power steering pump

well my power steering is acting weird on my 96 z28. my belt was squeaking really bad. i thought it was just the belt going bad. i had not had a chance to get to an auto parts store all i could do it hit it with a little WD40 (not really a fix i know) and worry about it later. well this morning i saw that the belt was making a noise becasue the power steering pump wasnt moving at all and the belt was just draging on it. is it my pump going bad?

Well if the pump isn't moving that's not a good sign. You can remove the belt and see if you can spin the pump by hand (it should turn easily), if not you may have seized a bearing and need to replace the pump.

If the pulley on the power steering pump isn't spinning, the pump is bad. I recently had an alternator that was locked up while it had belt tension on it. With the belt off, it turned so-so by hand, but still didn't feel the best. Quite possible the belt tension is enough to make your bad bearing bind.
