I drove my 81 z28 for the first time in months today, and its got a steering problem. Whenever I turn the wheel all the the to the left or right it stalls. I talked with my dad and we figured the power steering pump is going bad, Could it be anything else?

 

Pretty weird. P/S pump shouldn't affect the engine unless it's locking up, but it would be LOUD screaming noise.

 

It wasnt really screaming, but it was loud enough to hear over idle. It also only happens during low to no throttle, Because I drove it in a circle while cranking the wheel all the way to the left and it did just fine. But when I took it in the road to back it up when ever I cranked the wheel to either side it would stall.

 

Could be the pump is clogged a bit and the motor has to give it a bit more to get the pulley turning. I've never heard of a P/S pump effecting the engine either. Does the motor bog down while braking as well?

 

it doesnt bog down while braking. ANd it only stalls when its turned all the way to the left or right.

 

Flush the P/S pump and system. Just to be safe. Dad might be right on needing a new one.

 

What speed is the engine idling at?

 

I think about 1 grand.
