Default Performance MAF?

Occassionally my 94 z car starts up rough and then dies. Dealer read a MAF code when i took it in. I have no complaints because this doesn't happen often but the MAF is the original part...at 15 years old it's bound to have issues...I was looking into granatelli MAF sensors to get a bit more pep out of the motor and save some more fuel. I've redone the entire exhaust (w/o cats), as well as installed a KAI and the granatelli intake elbow. All fuel systems are stock and I don't plan on changing them.

Anyway the DELCO part is over 400 bucks! Granatelli is just over 300 with tax...Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this particular part and liked it.

Please make sure its not the wire for the MAF being burnt at the headers like mine was... my knock sensor wire and maf wire were burnt to my headers throwing a MAF code... I bought a whole new maf sensor after cleaning it out and it didnt do anything... cant you pick up the acdelco one for like 140 after the core from autozone?

i didn't even know there was a core charge for that part. everywhere i went just gave me a price on the new part...and the wires goin into the sensor are fine (at least they aren't getting burned) IF the delco part is that cheap that's awesome and i'll go and grab one but if there is a performance difference from the granatelli i'll spend the extra $$

The stock MAF passes more air than your engine currently can use, so a larger unit will do nothing for you. You can try running the engine with the MAF wires unplugged and note if the problem goes away.

i wasn't planning on changing the MAF housing, just the sensor itself. Will a performance MAF require a larger housing? I figured the only difference was how it read the air flow going into the intake manifold. If no one knows anyting about the performance ones, i guess ill just stick to the factory part.

You might find this thread helpful in troubleshooting your problem:

There has been debate for a long time whether the Granatelli MAF is better than the stock MAF. I'm not sure about the sensors by themselves (without the housings).

A aftermarket MAF from whoever is not worth it. It's the same sensor just without a screen and a ported housing, which you can do to the stock MAF sensor. The aftermarket ones may be a little bigger bore, but like it was mentioned above, you won't use it. Just stick with a stock one and pull the screen out and cut the fins out of the housing.

As others have already said, don't worry about buying a "performance MAF." If you want a bigger housing you can check out the LT1 section on Mid-America Motorworks website, they have a replacement housing for ~$30 when it's on sale that is as big as the Grantinelli and doesn't have screens. There is no difference in the actual sensor after your computer learns the Grantinelli is trying to make it run rich.
