Do you plan on staying with the 4l60e? or going t56?

94-95 would be obd1 so may be different than 96-97. you can send the ecu in to be tested. depending on year may be cheaper to just buy one.

i see you have a 94, have a look around, looks like there 80 bucks programed to your vin

If you run a 94 computer you have to run the 94 4l60e. There unique, 93 was non electric, and in 95 they changed the trans again with the way the electronics work.

i would like to go with a manual. but it is easier to stick with an auto.

What About those cheap 5.3 motors from the gm trucks. Heard those are pretty popular for swaps. Dirt cheap to get one also.

it would be a lot of work, this car was designed for the LT1 and the LT1 only. even going from a stock V6 to the LT1 is a major job and there the same car.
