Default 94 Z28 burning oil

I just bought a 94 Z28 today its has 129k on it I was driving it back while my dad followed. He said whenever I shifted a cloud of smoke came from under the car. He made it aparent it was not from the exhaust. Once we got home a cloud of greyish white smoke came from the top of the engine on the passenger side. The oil does not have water in it but it is very low. Any ideas? My thoughts are that its a valve cover because its come from directly on top instead of back behind (Im thinking its not a rear main seal in this case because of that) but it acts like oil is dripping onto the exhaust so smoke is coming from underneath the car when the hood is shut. \_(._.)_/ I dont know I am by no means a mechanic

sure sounds like a valve cover gasket. make sure its not coming from the pcv valve location as well.

How clean is the engine compartment? Relatively clean? Can you see fresh oil anywhere?

If it is caked in an inch dirt and old oil, you might want to clean the engine bay first, just to see if you can determine where the oil is coming from. If you do need to clean the engine bay, be very careful with water and solvents around the optispark and all other electrical connections.
