If the engines make the same power & torque, and the drivers are of equal skill, the auto usually gets off the line quicker than the manual, but the manual has a higher trap speed. The ET is a toss up. The auto has a deeper first gear and torque multiplication by the torque converter and is able to get off the line quicker. The manual is more power efficient and catches up on the top end. The main advantages of the autoare consistency and less stress on the power train.

With today's technology, it's quite normal to see an automatic either equal or beat a manual-tranny (with a competent driver in both)!
The key to running automatics is to figure out the best combination of available-parts, for your application.
My SC'ed Z has a Corvette servo, & Eagle components in it's 4L60.I also have a 2400 B&M converter to help it build rpms off the line. Do some research, & you'll find what you need!
BTW, I ran side-by-side at 135 mph (& gaining) with a 3.42 gear, while racing a 6-speed '06 GTO- which had the double-overdrive! That's after I beat him by three cars from 0-100, then let him catch-up for the top-end run! So, IMHO, the stick doesn't necessarily win on the top-end, either!
Peace!
John
