Unhappy Tranny Rebuild or New Performance Tranny

Hello all,
I have a 98 V6 with a 5 speed manual. I've added a K&N intake and magnaflow catback, and recently put in ceramic headers and a Stage 2 clutch. I guess I didn't give it enough time to break the clutch in and now my 2nd gear synchro's bad. I was wondering if rebuilding the tranny would be the way to go or if I should invest in a new performance tranny? Its the original tranny in the car, I'm kinda worried that the rebuild won't beef it up enough to prevent this from happening again. If new tranny is the better choice I could use some recommendations, I don't wanna spend too much. I was thinking around a $1000 for a new one and like $500 for rebuild.

Thanks

Good luck finding those prices... I've been looking around at prices, and most used (non-rebuilt) transmissions are in the $400 to $600 range, while rebuilt ones are in the $1000 to $1500 range. Brand new transmissions are in the $2250+ range. Those prices are for stock... I'm guessing performance would be more.

If you want to do the rebuild yourself, instead of taking it to a shop, you can get various different kits. Some have just the bearings, while others have everything including shafts, etc. Going this route, you really need to investigate what's wrong with the tranny before you rebuild.

Edit: The prices I listed above do not include the labor. For any of those, you'd either have to install yourself or pay a mechanic a few hundred bucks to drop out the old one and put in the new one.

As a side note, when you take a Camaro to a GM shop, they do not rebuild the tranny, they swap it with for a rebuilt one...

Where can you get a NEW t5 tranny for $750? Please share. There really is not a preformace tranny to replace it with unless you go with the tremec 5 speed but I think they are close to 3K.

I don't mean this as a flame but a failed synchro is not a performance failure. Its also not caused by how the clutch is broken in. Its a failure cause by bad driving habits or a failing clutch componet. This causes by jaming gears when the cluch is not fully disengaged. I would be willing to bet even if you had a T56 you would still need a new synchro. This could have been a gift from the previous owner.

The question is do you trust the guy to repair it? Rebuild of a standard trans can be a funny thing. If all it needs is Syncs and a few bearing the price of the parts may be 100 bucks. But if a gear is chipped and you need a gear and counter gear the price sky rockets fast. That is why I am surpised you said you can find a new t5 for $750. Just the counter gear cost that back in the 80's

Yeah, when I called this guy, he said he would sell the tremec t-5 for 750. I did confirm with him that it is a new transmission and he said yes. I am not too car savvy, but I do trust my mechanic (who told me the synchro was bad). I may have worded my original post wrong. my mechanic did ask if I was engaging the clutch pedal all the way ( I told him I was, or I was pretty sure the pedal was fully engaged when changing gears). If I were to buy the tranny, I plan on taking it to my mechanic for the install and not the guy selling the part. I agree that this could have been a problem left over from the previous owner and one that I had previously attributed to the clutch before I had it replaced.

If someone is claiming that this tranny is brand new (not used), and offering it for that price... I wouldn't believe it for a second. Used, I'd believe. Rebuilt, perhaps. New... kid someone else.

Do a quick Google search for T5 Transmissions, and you'll see new ones going for $1300+, while rebuilt go for $850+.

That's my 2 cents.

Syncros wouldn't be bad just make sure you go for a guy you trust.

Just repair it and go on... Refer to Gorn's post tbh lol

The preformance tranny I was talking about is the Termec TKO. They are about $2300. They are the beefy version of the base T5.
