Rearend Question
I am potentially buying a 10 bolt rearend with posi and 355's in it tomorrow. It is used and hasn't been in a vehicle in 10 years. What should I be checking on this before purchasing? It is out of a '69 with multi-leaf, like mine, so fit shouldn't be a problem.
Go to the 1st gen section and click on one of the stickies. There is a link to codes you can use to verify the rear is what the seller says it is. You should also remove the rear cover and inspect the ring and pinion for any badly worn or broken teeth. Check for metal in the fluid as well.
Here found it for you. I don't see any 10 bolts with 3.55's and a posi thou. Maybe I'm missing it thou. I'm overtired, LOL

Thanks a bunch. I'll check that. He had sent me the following code, but it doesn't seem to correspond to what he's telling me it is... 2 PY 680371. He says it was from the top right axle tube... hmm.
Decoded it. It's a 78 Pontiac rearend, and based on the code from the ring gear inside, it wasn't a 3.55, it's a 3.42. If anyone wants it, it's just north of Seattle for $200. I'm not going to buy it.
