Rearend question
Im new around here...So Ill start off by saying Hello. My name is John and Im in the process of working over a 77LT Camaro. This is my first project and Im not an expert by far!
I have a question for yall. Im currently riding on a stock rearend and Im looking to switch for a posi or limited slip rearend. Which rearends interchange with the gen 2s, and which ones will be posi units? Im thinking the Z28s, Firebirds, and the Trans AM rearends swap but didnt know exactly which ones and if there are anymore that would fit and be posi.
Thank you for your time,
John

Welcome.
Are you currently driving the car, or just working on it? If you have the time and patience, my suggestion is re-build the one thats in it. That way, you know exactly what you have, and you wont spend time looking for something that could go south anytime anyway. You can tailor it to fit your needs/driving habits. Heres a couple pics of my rebuild.
If you do want to go that route, my suggestion is--dont do it yourself, unless you really know what you are doing. The backlash settings and crush sleeve are critical. Find a good shop that specializes in this kind of work, buy the parts yourself, and pay them a reasonable amount to do the labor.

hell friend and welcome. i have a 1980 z28 who ever had it befor i did tried to make into a racing car but ran out of money i guess, anyway he put in a rear end with gears that were only good from one red light to another and that's not what i wanted..i'm a cruiser,so i went to a yard and found a rear -end from a 1981 trans am,it has posi, disc brakesand most important to me factory gears..i can cruise now. the rear end was less than $200 and it bolt right up.good luck friend.

any second-gen F-body rearend will fit under your car. the thing with the Pontiac rears is you might end-up with discs in the rear
probably the best route is buying a carrier for your current rearend and pick the gearset you want and have them installed. if you go buying a used rearend and don't know exactly what you are looking at, you could end-up having to rebuild that one also.
it should only take a "competent"rearend shop a few hours to do the job

Thanks you guys for your help. I think I am gonna rebuild my rearend thats in it now that yall said all that. Your right, you just never know what your gonna get with another rearend, especially from a junkyard. So, Ill replace that low geared one wheel wonder peel carrier I got with a posi unit, and now all I got to do is decide on gearing!
