Default electric carb help

Have an 87 with an electric carb that to me is a piece of crap. It's a quaddrajet. Problem is when we start it for the first 30 sec it runs great. Then the carb starts dumping fuel and before long the plugs are fouled. It has had a kit put in. The float is set correctly, but I think something might be up with that. My main ? is can we put a non-electric carb on this and just leave the wires lay or will it screw something else up? The only thing that I could think of would be the timing as it is the only other thing with wires to it. Can get all kinds of non-electric carbs at the salvage yard. Not so with the electric ones.
