electric fuel pump and carb problem
I have a friend with an 87 firebird with a carbed chevy 350. The recently rebuilt engine has a 750 holley, vac advance dizzy, and is feed with a holley electric fuel pump. The car will run poorly then stallwhen the engine reaches normal operating temp. We've noticed it stalls only in town and has no problems on the open highway. He has a fuel pressure gauge on the carb inlet line. It reads 7-8 psi when engine running and drops off to nearly 0 when about to die. You can hear the fuel pump's sound slows down when stalled. We're thinking that the fuel pump is creating to much pressure during in town driving and probably fighting it self causing the pump to fail, thus stalls. If you let the car cool off or take a wet rag to the pump it will fire right back up again until the pump overheats again. We got a replacement pump from the autoparts store thinking it was defective but the new pump resultedwith the same symptom. A friend suggested that we run a circulating return line back to the tank to relieve exessive pressure during low speeds. I just want your thoughts before he spends anymore $$ on this problem. Do you think the pump is loading up? What type of regulator with a return would be the most practical? thanks
I would definitely install areturn style regulator. It will help the pump run smoother, and can also prevent vapor lock. The pump's pressureis being "held back" by the present dead-end regulator. Butthe bypass/return line will divert the excess fuel back to the tank allowing the pump to work at a more constant rate.
