your right gorn we had to shim out the water pump just a little bit its so hard to find shims around hear so case hard washers seem to have done it ,for now ,now its a 2 wire vs the 1 wire ,an wired in to the same place as the fuel pump on the harness seem to have fixed it ,that an I switched from the junk yard alternator to a remaned one ,with life time warranty in case ,my friend is good an meens well but the junk yard alternator died after a few days ,yes we realy taped it well when we took it apart but the paint may not have helped at all so plain works fine its clean thank you guys I checked the volts just now 12,4 ,we wanted to make sure it was charging after a fan cycle ,seems fine yes don't relize how hot an alternator gets it self an 14,4 running an be sure it was not drawing power with everything off,on to the next thought of to much heat below

??? ok now that we got it straight ,? is how hot is to hot for an alternator ,when we let it run through the fan cycle ,we touched it very hot to the touch seemed to hot,now I feel that it should be hot but not to hot that it will burn you if you keep your hand on it ,so I seem to think now that its a 2 wire we may need some sort of resistor or its own fuse link ,or hook it to another part of the harness couse we had checked the junk yard one was rebuilt not long ago everything looked good ,but heat can couse the regulator to go fast,it was 900F vht for calipers so my thought is how could the paint have done it , ,an the heater hose we put an insulator on so that wont affect the new one ,it was a one wire at one time thanks an Advance
.it was about 133F mabey hotter ,another thought is that it got that hot at idle to charge the battery back up too wich it was doing at idle, now we have re routed the hoses couse the one was laying right on the regulator an mabey that extra heat did it too the old one it could be that is just gets that hot being right near the head too ,an could be just fine, we are going to run it on its own line seperate from the fuel pump line though with a 15 amp fuse . ok thank you

yes some what last night was 155f when I got to my destination,we found out on a 94 olds cutless ,they have dummy light ,an that that acts like a resistor ,an that we need to wire it to that or have a resistor in place couse they only need to run on 3 volts is what probley burned out the regulator couse its getting 12v mabey less ,so we are going to rewire it then keep an eye on it ,,we could make my radiator stand up more for more room to fit a standard sbc atl but that will be to much work it seems till later on ,an put that an the fuel pump on there own fuses links too to avoid fire there is 2 brown wires an one red ,one allows the 12 volts power an the other keeps it down to 3 volts ,the wrong one keeps it at over 3 volts couse it burned out to fast the first one ,I did not get the message to not drive it till I had already this one I can return if I need to ,that's part of the frankin car ,but once set ,will be good I think so

so looks like we got it right now with 82 ohm 5 watt resister right near the edelbrock decal that keeps the power to 3 volts to the alternator an put 15 amp fuse link too ,you know how hard it is to find a resistor anymore ,radio shack is going out of bussness,an we put that tentioner to get more on the water pump fingers crossed ,no resistor coused thats what burned out the other one ,seems to run better all around too

A one wire alternator and an external excited alternator (2 wire) uses different voltage regulators. The exciter wire wants to be connected to a 12 volt source further down the hot (input) wire that is connected to the alternator. With a resistor in line with the exciter wire, the charging system is going to think voltage is low and tell the voltage regulator to charge constantly, either burning up the alternator or overcharging/frying/blowing the battery. Did I happen to mention you do not want a resistor there?
as painful as it may be got to read this whole post.its not a one wire no exciter wire anymore ,it is a 3 wire ,an without that resistor thats what burned up the red painted one in like 4 hours ,we did a lot of home work ,because that alt is from a 94 cutless the dummy light acted as the resistor ,so that's why we needed to put one in there ,an now its much better on 3 wire then the old one wire,an now its on its own fuse now too wired to the fuse box ,will keep an eye on it I guess worse case in an external regulator ? but why ,looked at some threads where a guy had this hooked up an it talked about 3 volts was all it needed an that 12 volt would burn it out ,,my friend though a master mech growing older no one knows it all when comes to these swaps an takeing over after the one wire I will tell him, test it often ,thanks Camaro 69 ,I guess if its not right it wont take long then back to step one ,but I have a good warranty on the alt though if it frys for lack of power, for a battery that has been through heck an back , just checked it now its holding 12.4 off an 14.43 running near a week later an charging at idle to, so now with one red wire 2 brown the red is hooked to the back of the alt, one brown for ignition .an the other brown hooked to the resistor or what would have been a dummy light on 94 cutless an into the key on its own fuse 15 amp plenty ,though one concern I still had was it was 174F after before it was 155f then I have heard it can get 200f under the hood of a car in this hot weather too, he went to school for wireing too he seems to think its fine now, though with me it allways takes a few weeks to feel comfortable again ,so let me know what you think thanks

FYI, Shim is a generic term meaning anything stuck between something, yes you can buy shim stock in anything from hardened steel to plastic and you can buy body shims but a washer are a great shim. In fact I have shimmed a lot of pulley systems and I can not remember using anything but washers. I have been know to grind a washing down a little to get it dead on
. Old V-belt where very forgiving, they may have worked a little better slightly out of alignment (so the old timers said). Multi groove belts work better the straighter they are.Where did you put a 15 amp link?

Ok that's different. When you said a couple posts above "so I seem to think now that its a 2 wire"..., apparently you meant 2 wires on the plug plus the fat red one on back, 3 total. With only 2 wires mentioned, I was envisioning you putting the resistor on the exciter wire, which is what I was referring to above.
