Rear end Clunk - I'll try to explain
Hey yall, looking for some advise. I just purchased a 1999 SS Camaro for my 26th birthday on Sunday and this thing is sweet. It's got 28k miles on it, 6spd tranny, booker exaust and looks like a bit of a modified airbox.
My biggest concern is that when I come from a dead stop, and move forward (in gear or neutral) the car has a slight clunk comeing from the back. This also happens when I go backwards as well (doesn't matter if I'm in gear). I asked my father what the problem may be and he said have a look at the U-joints connecting the drive shaft. Does this register with anyone?
Also I remember the dealer saying the guy had greased packed his own bearings for something in the read end. Should I take my car to the dealer for an inspection or a sport performance shop?
The dealership gave me a 30 day or 1000 miles warranty. I assume I'll have to bring it back to them if there's any issues.
thanks for checkin out my post, I hope I get some good help here.

RE: Rear end Clunk - I'll try to explain
Looks like the chevy dealerships will charge around 410 bucks to replace the U-joints (parts/labor included). I'll take the Camaro back to these guys, but they're just small time. The dealership also said there is other mounts under there that could be making the noise. We'll have to see.
Also, I went about 50-60 miles down a high way and stopped for some gas. The temp was around 50 or so and my exaust was steaming like it usually does when I 1st warm the car up in the morning. I think it does this after a hard rev... but I'm too out of touch with cars to think of what it could be.

Does your clunk sound like it's coming from way back at the rear end, or possibly more towards the center of the car? If your transmission mount is bad (separated), your trans will lift as you accelerate and bang into the tunnel. If the mount is bad, replace it with a polyurethane one. Not only are the poly ones more durable, they also have an interlock that prevents separation.
