New owner question/problems
Hey everyone I recently bought a 97 Z28 and just curious of a few things. The camaro was taken care of it has 67k miles. I had the water pump and distributor replaced.
I ran out of gas the other day I noticed it was running like it was but on my way to gas station it ran out and still said it had a quarter of a tank. The gauge jumps all over the place I noticed. My dad owned an IROC z28 when I was younger he said it did same thing. Just wondering if its a common thing.
Another problem is sometimes gas pedal feels pretty stiff and it drives great and often when I drive it feels like pressing gas does nothing at all and drives bad when its near half a tank of gas.

change fuel filter. test fuel pressure. the gas tank in the 4th gen is set sorta on end and is slimmer on the bottom so the level drops really fast below 1/2 tank. also some do run out as high as 1/4 tank. my first 93 ran out just above 1/8th this one goes just to e.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanks for the info appreciate it. I'm going to try to get around to changing filter tomorrow I don't know if it has ever been changed.

Something to consider as well. Your fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel. When you get to about 1/4 of a tank your pump's "coolant" level drops below the level of the pump and allows the pump to run hot. These pumps run all out at all times and this generates alot of heat and electric motors do not do well when hot. The #1 reason for a fuel pump to die is running low on fuel on a regular basis.
As for the gauge, the sender is part of the pump assembly and when you replace the pump you get a new sender. This will sometimes fix the misleading fuel level readings. The other main issue with the gauges on these cars is the quality of the stepper motors used in the cluster. If yours bounces wildly then you prolly need to have the stepper motor replaced. Check for a speedometer repair shop near you they will be the best price. The dealer will simply charge you 3 arms and your first born for a new cluster plus your leg to program it. Speedo shop fixes your cluster so no programming needed and the turnaround will be hours not days.
