Default new keys and...

2002 SS M6
Bought the car and only got 1 ignition key and the remote...nothing else.

My son (2 year old) decided it was a good idea to play with the key while I was at work and lost it. After a week of looking I took the title down to the GM dealer and got a new ignition key and door key. Not a remote as that was another $200!

My problem is when I unlock the driver side door I have about 10 seconds to get the ignition key in and turn the car to the ON position or the alarm goes off. If I unlock the passenger door the alarm goes off immediately.

What gives? The door key is just a key, no microchip or anything. The dealer told me to bring the car in and they would look at it but I don't trust dealers...next thing you know I'll be paying for a new ignition and alarm system.

This is normal. Your security system will arm even if you dont have the fob. DONT BUY ONE FROM GM OR HAVE THEM PROGRAM IT FOR YOU!! You can get a new fob off E-bay or other places for about $15 each and you can program them yourself. You can also disable the 10 second thing if you want, the directions are in the owner's manual.

Bummer, man. I hope the remote and key show up eventually.

Having a 5 YO daughter and a 3.5 YO son I *know* how stuff disappears and/or mysteriously moves from floor to floor in our house. "Hey, didn't I put my screwdriver right here 5 minutes ago?"

They tell me that someday I'll be able to laugh about this stuff. Someday...

Thanks Massey! Just saved me $170 on the remote.

The new keys are now on a hook above the house door so little hands can't get to them. My son at least admitted to taking them. Said he took them outside to play but can't remember where....probably buried in the sandbox...

My son who is now 4 burried his favorite car out at our community park when he was 3. He still talks about the car today, and it still upsets him that I could not find it and he does not remember where he burried it. 10 million years from now aliens are going to get to dig up a little 1:48 scale model of a 69 SuperBee.

Smnw, *up* is definitely our strategy at the moment but these little critters learn, darn it! "Hey, the same stool we use to reach the sink at toothbrushing time can be used to get the stuff on the mantle that we're not supposed to touch!"
Massey, several important things have disappeared from the window sill in our 3rd floor bathroom. The same window sill that is next to the toilet. Hmmm, I wonder.....
