Default Keys

When I got my SS, it only came with one key on it. I want a 2nd key so I can have as a spare key. Were can I fine a blank key WITH the chip in the key. And can I program the key to the car myself or do I have to take it to the dealership to have them program it?

Please note that I do not have the 2nd key at all.

Thanks!

take out the trusty ohm meter and find out what the reading is on your key chip. then find the code on this link. i found my extra keys on ebabe for 9 bucks a year or so ago, took it to the local hardware store and had it cut for free. im sure if you google it you will find a place.

New keys can be made at a locksmith for about $15 or the dealership for about $20. I prefer the dealer keys since they have the GM logo on the black plastic just like the car's factory keys. Most locksmiths and GM dealers can read the chip to get the key number. There are 16 different keys for most years of the chipped key.

So the car starts based on the output that the chip is giving? So I don't have to do no special code on the SS like I would have to do on new cars?

The "chip" in the key is simply a resistor. There are 16 different ones, and when your car was first started at the factory the VATS system read the first key and programed itself to that key code. If you ever have a damaged key that can no longer be read then you will have to have a dealer make a key based on your VIN, but you have to prove ownership of the car before they will do this. If your key still works then the dealer will just copy the key based on the key you bring them.

Do you have a idea on what the dealership is going to charge me?

I just had a new key made the other day and I paid less than $20 for it. IT should be right around that price, things change depending on where you live and what have you.

Thank you. I have to stop at the Chevy dealership to talk to my service writer tomorrow, I'll just pick up a key while I'm at it.

I vote dealership. I have not had good luck with Non-GM keys with the chip.

Although with that said, I would just hardwire the resistor into the harness. Then you can buy whatever key you want, with or without chip.

Just had my spare made yesterday by my trusted local locksmith. One ignition key with the GM logo and 3 generic door keys for $25. He even came to where I work and made them since he is on the run all the time. The local GM dealer wanted $30 for the ignition and $4 for each door key.
