Installing rear caliper
i used a brake spring tool. Super price on K-Tool International 70131 at ToolTopia.com it has a rounded point on one handle that you put on the place where the spring goes and it slid on there. vice grips should work with some cussing.
this works on the spring for the rear disc? on page 375 of the 94 service manual you provided has a better shot of that spring, its labeled #4. Kind of nervous to use a vice grip, cant afford to loose any teeth lol
Yup. That's the one I was thinking of. It took a lot of cussing and wondering why the hell they'd have it install on one caliper but not the other already. Gotta be careful if you use vice grips/channel locks though.
it would have been nice to have it already together. I knew as soon as I took it out I would have problems getting it back in. Ill have to work on her this weekend, wish me luck and thanks for the help again
ok so bad news for me. I bent the spring using vices. I need to replace this thing and rock auto doesn't seem to have it. Any idea where to get this thing besides a junk yard? Here is a pic of it https://www.dropbox.com/s/p2rhy1ywq3...pring.jpg?dl=0
Steps to re-install the torsional emergency brake mechanism spring on a 93-97 Camaro Rear Caliper:
Tools : Medium sized Vice grips & Medium flat screwdriver.
1) Remove the emergency brake caliper actuation cable from the lever and bracket.
2) Insert the spring into the slot closest to the emergency cable retainer.
3) Laying on your back positioned looking at the spring from the middle of the car grab only the last coil on the spring with the vise grips. Start twisting the spring so the other hooked end moves along the lever toward the lever catch. When it gets close with your free hand take the flat screwdriver just below the coil of the spring and hook the end of the twist spring and force it down the last 1/2 inch until it hooks onto the lever. ( The secret to twisting the spring is to only grab the last wire on the torsional spring with the vise grips.)
4) Re-install the emergency cable to the holder
5) Use the screwdriver to pry the lever toward the cable hook and connect.
I hope these notes help people avoid the 4 hrs of frustration I suffered trying to reconnect the torsional emergency brake spring to the lever.
