Default Car Won't Start

When I turn the key to turn my car on the car makes absolutely no attempt at starting. I replaced the ignition switch, got a new key, and checked the starter. I have seen this in other posts and was about to bypass the VATS, but when I got to my car the battery was dead so I just left it.

One thing I couldn't find, however, is what this is (I'll attach the picture as a reply).
It was on the steering column attached to the ignition switch. There are two rods that come out of the steering wheel area and into the ignition switch and this part. The one that goes into this part doesn't appear to be moving and feels loose. So my question here is do you guys know what this part is and what it does and do you feel like it would impair my ability to start the car?

looks like a dimmer switch to me. if the bar is not moving for the ignition switch that would be your problem. look at number 3 here https://camaroforums.com/forum/93-02...o-specs-71052/ also you can download a manual from here F Body Service Files

Thanks for identifying that for me. The bar that goes to the ignition switch does move. When I turn the ignition to on nothing happens and the security light flashes once a second. I found an old post you did that related to that and I believe I just need to bypass the VATS and hopefully it will start right up
