Default Back again, 2 issues- 1 voltage 1 codes

Hey guys, its been a while. I have had the p0171 and 0174 codes for egr/vacuum for about the past few weeks. It normally comes and goes off by itself, however this time is has stayed on and inspection is just about due. I changed the gas cap thinking it was that since it was cracked on the seal. The next time I went to go fill up gas however, the gas filled the neck and didnt want to go in! I eventually got the gas to go in after leaving the cap off for the night and used my old cap as it seems my vent it plugged. My question is are the plugged gas vent and these two codes related? I also am going to put a dj smoker into the intake manifold for leaks tomorrow to see if I see any smoke anywhere.

2nd issue- Finally fixed the issue with the voltage, somewhat. I ended up buying a new delco alternator and the volts are reading 14.44-14.6 at various places under the hood, however inside the car, everything still blinks with the music and the gauge still goes into the red. Are there any grounds under the dash? Also is there a main ground that feeds the interior?

Thanks in advance!

The EGR codes you are getting are usually related to the valve dying. Not always but usually

There are 2 main grounds for the dash, they are located behind the kick panels on each side near where the dash bolts to the cowl. I think there is a couple more under the dash in varoius places as well, but I dont have the underdash schematics any more.

Thanks Massey, I am assuming that you are referring to the egr valve.

About the grounds, is the area you speak of in the bottom right and bottom left corner of the dash if I were sitting inside facing the front of the car?

Yup on both!
My grounds on my 99 and 00 were only accessable once I pulled the kick panels out of the way. There are like 6 screws on the rocker next to the seat and then a clip or 2 under the dash.

Thanks for clearing that up, I looked at it and was scratching my head a little. You said your cars were access able , did you sell them?

Ohh ok, I remember you did a decent amount of work to the 99. I did an oil change, found the ground on the driver side and cleaned it up and now the gauge doesn't go below the 13 mark. I also took out the air duct and blew out the maf screen and took off the iac and sprayed it with carb cleaner. I drove the car and after about 5-7 miles the light came off by it self! I drove it about 30 miles and it hasn't come back on yet. Maybe that was the fix?

Sounds like you nailed it. Yea I did alot of work on Sarah, some due to a driver who didnt stop at a stop sign. She actually totaled the car, but the damage was not that bad. It was the car's age more than anything else that caused it to be totalled. Since there was no insurance trail on the deal there is no Car Fax record of it either. I did the repairs correctly and unless I was to point out exactly where the damage is you would not know just looking at it. There was a small area behind the headlight that I had to hammer back into the right shape, other than that everything that was damages was replaced. The other thing I had to do was put a new engine in her. I bought her for $500 knowing the engine was bad, I got a new engine for $700 and a couple hours of work. $1200 was a killer price for a car as nice as that was. I wish now I never sold it.
