The LT4 cam is on the small side for a 383, heck I would not even bother with that cam on a stock cube engine.
I believe the lt4hotcam is bigger than the ralleysport lt4 cam. but im not sure. I know the standard lt4 cam my buddy has hardly even has a lope. however, with stock heads he needs to watch out. he should have gotten a good port job and oversized valves put in or something to balance out all the extra displacement and exhaust work. hes going to be choking at the intake and exhaust valves even though everything else is openned way up

no not stock heads. they will be ported and valve jobs done. and all that stuff. in sense im running stock heads as in im not going out and buying 2000$ heads from someone like jegs or summit.

I would really hesistate to go with a more extreme cam than the engine builder recomends. Why would you trust him to build out the entire engine, but not to pick the cam? You can easily overcam an engine, you already said you are running stock heads, I REALLY would just go with whatever your engine builder suggests. If he built the motor,he knows what combo is going to run best.
"building" an engine is not that big of a deal, most shops just use a stroker kit and may not actually know what cam works best in every instance. Many shops will call the cam companies and ask them what cam to run. Yes you can over-cam an engine but in this case we are talking a 383 with ported heads, it will make more and still be streetable with a larger cam.

True, I am one thatjust always likes to air on the side of caution when it comes to camming an engine. I have seen way to many guys out there with motors that could be great runners, but they overcammed; because it becomes more of an ego thing. They want the noticable lope, the crazy sound, and of course more power. What they end up with is a motor that is not a good combo and runs like ****. Thus, I always think very conservatively when it comes to my own cams, and definatly when it comes to giving cam advice to other people-it is so easy to overcam. That is just my general philosophy when it comes topicking a cam.You guys seem to have specific knowledge about the LT-4 Hot Cam though- I dont really know anything more about that cam than whatit says on the box.

Oh I agree 100%, it is a common mistake to overcam. However in this case, with a 383 and ported heads a bigger cam is going to give more power and because of the bigger cubes it will remain streetable. Think of an LS1, guys are running huge cams (+.600lift and +.230* @ .50)on stock heads and getting a ton power, it's because the heads flow enough to use a big cam.
