so I got a real good deal on a 89 rs with a 305 tbi engine. Its smoking some and pretty sure its a piston ring. Im asking for help on what gaskets I will need to replace so I can buy all at once. And any other components I should replace while its apart? If anyone can point me in the direction on a walk through...

 

After doing some research and studying my problem. It blows withe smoke at startup and if im stopped at a light and then take off. Have read up on it and believe I should start with just the valve stem seals since I plan on a whole new engine anyways when I return from deployment. Anyone have any input or advice?

 

Save your time and money on doing valve seals on a 305 head. Put your time and money and 350-383 sbc with a carb and go from their. 350 vortec from a 96-2000 truck or van and a carb and intake and a hei and your set.

 

Thanks for the info. I plan on buying a turn key crate 350 or 383 when I get back from deployment but would prefer not to be smoking the next 4 month until I leave. How time consuming is it? And what would be the difficulty level? Im good if there's a write up, just more electonically gifted than mechanical.

 

Is the exhaust smoke you are seeing white or blue?
White means water
Blue means oil
What does your oil look like? and white milky stuff in it?

I just picked up a carb'd 86 IROC and it ran like crap and smoked like a chimney, I pulled the plugs and all 8 were black and full of crap, the oil was old and thin, i thought the engine was shot, but I gave it a 100% tune up replaced 5 electrical switches and relays and an o2 sensor and the engine came back to life, no smoke at all. The car did sit for 2 years before i got it. I have put abot 100 miles on it so far and the more I drive it the better it runs, it is cleaning the old built up crap out of the engine.
I suggest you check your plugs and give it a tune up and go from there.
