Default What can a stock differential take?

How much Horse Power and Tourqe can the stock differential of a '88 base trim (V6) take? Since I am looking into putting a 403 in i was curious if the differnetial will take the power it will be putting out (some where in the area of 300hp not sure though). Thanks in advance.

if its a 403 with only 300 hp, thats an awfully low number. i know that the rear ends can be broken with a 350 with just a cam, manifold, and headers if you arent careful. i dont know if the v6 cars are weaker, but i doubt it. if anything, that would last longer because it woudlnt have been subjected to as much abuse for 19 years.

if its a 403, like a brand new motor from summit or somewhere, it is probably built for torque. And no I dont think the stock axle will take that. The v6 axle is a good choice tho because they came with higher gears i think

your stock 10 blot will easily hold up to 300 hp, but as microkid said that isnt puttin out much hp with that 403. i still have my stock 10 bolt with 342 gears, and my car puts out near 400 hp, i havent had any problem with it drag racing with slicks even. If you wanted to change to a 12 bolt or ford 9 inch you will have to get rid of the torque arm setup though.

Well the 403 i am throwing in is a '79 Olds and i was curious if am gonna have to get another rear end or not though i belive (not positive) i will have to shorten the Driveshaft or find one that fits.

Another question what would i have to change the Shaft and Rear end if I am using a TH400?
