I have a shift light in my '91 camaro rs (standard trans) that at first I thought was broken, becuase it would come on at seemingly random times. But then i realized it only comes on when im not accelerating nor decelerating and obviously high enough in that gear. My question is, has anyone modded this thing so that it only comes on at certain RPM'S? Im assuming that the only way of doing this is tinkering with the ECM which im not going to do. It just doesn't have any use the way its set up.

I do believe they are set for economy. It senses your drive style at the moment and tells you when to shift.
You want a shift light, hang an Autometer under the center vents

 

mine never did work..i was up around 4500 or 5000 rpms and it never kicked on.

 

Oh i see, I wasn't lookin for some big ugly shift light was just looking to make the one that already in acully useful.
