Default shift light

1986 z28 305 TPI. where should i set my shift light at? the tranny, when left alone in drive, shifts at 4k, when the orange starts on the stock tach. i mostly use my car for daily driving with street racing and cruising on the weekends. i currently have it set at 4500 rpm.

If you have an automatic what is the use of a shift light...other than looking cool.
The max power is 4800 RPM so there is no reason to go over that.

well, its not really a shift light on my tach, but a little red arrow. shift light is easier to say. i can see taking it to 5k if its a close race because then the engine is closer to max hp in the next gear

I gotcha!
I know exactly what your talking about. I got a 5" monster tach to put in my mom's S10 with one of those pointers.

haha, im hoping it has something done in order to require a monster tach. i dont even think one of them will fit in a third gen. which brings me to another question, where would a good place be to mount the tach? i have it on my old dash, barely holding onto the crappy top. i cant get the screws to go any deeper, and i tried drilling with no luck (weird angle), and i dont want to have that issue when i get a new pad

What size gauges do you have? Did you happen to see the link I left to the gauges I sold? If you have the small gauges you can fit all six in there.

the volt, oil pressure, and temp are around 1 1/2", the fuel was near 2 inches, and the tach is 3 1/2"

I had the 3 3/8" tach and speedo and the rest of the gauges 2 1/8". It looks as if you need to make a panel. Are you using the stock speedo? You can maybe get a piece of aluminum and use your old bezel as a template and cut out a new one. Might look sweet.

im not that concerned with cosmetics right now. i am using the stock speedo. the gauges wont fit in over the original plastic peice, and i dont want to cut it out because it has the circuit panel which i need for the lights around the speedo. eventually, i might cut it out, but im not sure. its at the very bottom of my list of priorities.
