70 rearend gears swap
ok i swapped out my 70 camaro rearend previous owner had a way low gear in there for drag racing so i swapped the entire rear end with a 79 camaro and it appears its way high like a 2.?. heres the problem before i could burn the tires off but couldnt get over 40 mph without extreme whining, so i put the 79 rearend in and now i can go down the highway, but i cant even leave rubber and cant go into 4th unless im going like 70. My question is how hard or how expensive to get someone to just change the gears, i dont want to pull the whole thing out again, thanks
also whats the best gears for speed but also highway driving?

The rear end you just put in (going from original sales flyer), is 2.41 ratio. The 4spd came out with either a 3.08 or a 3.42 depending on which 4 spd tranny it had. I just had my rear end redone with a 3.42 posi and it cost $1100, but that included the cost of a new posi unit. Is the unit you put in open or posi?
If it's just a gear change you'll probably be looking at a couple hundred dollars, plus parts. The gears are going to set you back about $180, and a install kit another $50-$60. I would also recommend a 3.42 or 3.55 ratio for all around driving.
As Shalamara mentioned, you should make sure the new rearend is a posi, or use the carrier from your old rearend. If you bought a 2 series rearend, you can't change to 3 series gears without also changing the carrier, as the gears wont fit the 2 series carrier. All ratios from 3.08 to 4.56 use the same carrier, but the rearends under 3.00 ratio use a different carrier, so you will probably have to rob parts from that old 4.11 rear, or sell it and buy a carrier, and ring/pinion.

posi,my mechanic buddy told me the old one was like 4.5 or 4.8 if there is such a thing. i sure miss the quick take off, but not the highway driving. i had a mustang pass me because i couldn't get over 40, so i took the old one out and now i cant stand driving it cus i cant get any speed out of her. I had to idle the carb way up just to take off after putting the new one in and my buddy wont mess with the gears he said its too tricky, thanks
Not sure what your buddy meant by "4.5 or 4.8" ? If he meant ratio, then it contradicts the 4.11 you mentioned previously. Like I mentioned, you can't change the ratio without changing the whole carrier, unless you don't mind also installing a ring gear spacer on the carrier to adapt to the 3 series gears. Spacers are not used on all out performance cars, but they work. I had to use a ring gear spacer on my oddball 10 bolt in my old Austin gasser's Pontiac rear. It came from a Canadian car, and we couldn't locate a carrier to do the swap, so a ring gear spacer solved the problem and let me swap from 2.73 to 3.73 gears. If you're only going to do occasional drag strip runs, a spacer will work fine. Mine does, and it isn't just a cruiser, it gets beat on too.
