It may have somethig to due with the design. Vortecs use the heart shaped chamber to create tumble in the air flow. If you open the gap I could see it slowing the fuel charge down. Vortecs rely heavily on the tumble phenominon. The 305 heads I have actually have a bump in the chamber to induce the tumble. I think 350's have the bump in the runner. I could be wrong.

Anyhow regardless of the engine I would shoot for .040" squish. My stroker is right there. Pistons are .005" in the hole with a 0.039" gasket. The tight squish or quench area creates higher velocity in the a/f mix. This makes the engine less prone to detonation. Timiing can also be advanced slightly more too. Although I have read Dirt's sticky and it states they almost always like 32*.

BTW Steve did you get gaskets for the older block or the newer heads? I can't seem to find an answer. Maybe it doesn't matter, I just want to be safe. I'm using 305 Vortecs on my 305 powered truck. Also a link to you intake gaskets too. Thanks in advance.

The gaskets I got were like .016 thick. There us only one. I will get part numbers in morning. Chillin now.

thanks alot. Been trying to do things right. Mainly I have been doing things in major bursts.

I think my next little project is going to be to pull the fenders off of the Z 28 and blast them and por15 inside of them so I can hand them off to my Father In Law to get going on body work and get them painted.

I couldn't find anything that said it was specifically for the Vortec heads, so I assume they ue the same tyle gasket.

Right, the vortec style heads don't have a vortec specific head gasket, you just want to shoot for the correct quench.

Well I finally finished reading your project. Lots of great work you've done there. Its definitely at labor of love for us all who spend years working on restoring these old cars.

Great thread....great looking car. My hat is off to You and 77nomad and the other guys who can work on thier cars,get up go to work and keep kids and a wife happy..
