ttop weatherstrip removal
Today I took out the old weatherstripping off the ttop and doors. (79 white Berlinetta) I have replacements coming. There is rust in just a couple of places. I will take care of that. The clips that hold my weatherstripping down in the inside corners are being replaced. I had one really good one, I used it as a pattern and fabbed three more. They are good. The weatherstripping came out pretty good. I watched the fbody youtube, and its done. The old adhesive.... is that a problem? It is pretty smooth, and the channels are clear for the most part. Will the new 3m stick to the old glue ok? Do I have to remove the old adhesive, if so, what should I use. The paint is good, and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks!

Don't use sandpaper, unless you want to repaint. I'd mask off around the area to avoid overspray, then use some brake cleaner and a plastic scraper. Spray a little on the residue, then let it sit a short while and try scraping it. The plastic scraper wont damage paint, and the bbbrake cleaner will soften the glue.
You definitely need to get it off, or you'll have sealing or adhesion issues. You can touch up the paint under the weatherstripping if any does come off, and the weatherstripping will cover it. Don't leave any bare spots, or they will eventually rust.

Thanks for the repy you two. I called 3M and asked them what to do. They do have a general purpose cleaner that worked. I got most of the old black adhesive off this afternoon. I will get the rest of it tomorrow. It takes awhile, but it looks like it will be worth it. I have a couple of rust spots. I thought I would get some of that paint that bonds to the rust.... paint it with that first, and then use adhesive over it. Thanks!!
