removing my 79's speedo cable
Look for this type of spring clip: Speedo Cable Clip that will be around the speedo cable housing. Just push the tab down against the cluster, and pull the cable out.
Take it back off, pull the inner cable out of the housing, clean it off with a good solvent (brake cleaner), and lube it back up with a graphite-based speedo cable lubricant. Oil is the last thing you want to use on a speedo cable, and it will actually cause a needle to bounce.
