getting on the road

They sell some inexpensive plastic ones at most chain stores, about $10-$15. Or a junkyard might have an old input shaft from a junk tranny. That's what I always used.

I didn't think he was seriously gonna sell it. Dang, that sucks. I wish the kid was closer I'd give him some help. It has to be discouraging without a real mentor. Someone who really keeps his interest up. My dad and his buddies had me at car shows as young as 3. We also have pics of my mom pregnant at the strip. I couldn't help but to learn.

Yeah, I know what it's like to not have a family that lived and breathed cars. That describes mine for sure. They all liked cars, but nobody did much of their own repairs until I came along. Always wondered if I was adopted or something?
I personally just latched onto anyone who showed me they were interested in cars, and would put up with my incessant questions and hangng around! In the end it all worked out, as I found a mentor who was really a cool car guy. Unfortunately he was also a crook, and much of what I thought was legitimate car building was accumulated through ill gotten means. When I got old enough to know what was going on I asked about it, and he laughed. Couldn't believe I took so long to catch on, and thought I already knew.
Years later (and several trips in and out of the state prison) he finally settled down and got legit. We stayed friends throughout that time, but I NEVER bought anything he had for sale, and he respected that. I stayed friends with his family after he died and we had some good stories to swap in years since. My younger brother actually married one of his daughters, so we were kinda related in a way before his death.
Guess I'm gettin a bit off the thread though.
