Before messing with the timing, disconnect your throttle linkage to make sure it isn't pulling the carb open at idle. If it is, adjust the cable. If the throttle is fine, adjust the timing if it needs it. Do you have a timing light? For the kick down cable, you adjust so it's fully extended when the gas pedal is to the floor.
