hmm ok..Hughes offers th350s and th400's with a lower first gear (2.74) for an extra $300. Do you think its worth it for my application? Its like having a 3 speed 2004R

No. Too big a jump from 1st to 2nd with that low 1st gear. I doubt you'll need that with a big block and the rear gears you've planned.
