I have a 81 camaro and will have a 510hp 454 put in and plan on running 3.55 gears with posi. It's not gonna be a daily driver or full race car but just like a hot rodding car with an occasional drag racing and some car shows. so like 85% street, 10% racing and 5% freeway driving. I was thinking of just going with a th400 since its a little cheaper but kind of like the 200r4 or 700r4 just incase I do some freeway driving. Which do you think I should get?

I would get it from either Summit, trans Depot, Monster or a local shop. i've read some bad reviews about Monster, has anybody used them? or Trans Depot?

FYI its 700 R4 and the 200 4R. I would avoid the 200 4R. How bad do you want the 4th gear? A 700 R4 can be made to handle 510 Hp with stock type rear suspention but it will cost ya. Find a local transmission builder he can give you prices. If your going to upgrade you rear leaf springs for a better launch make sure tranny guy knows that.

 

700R4. I had one built by my local transmission guy for my Camaro. He says it's good for up to 600hp. My previous setup I was around the 300hp mark and it never slipped a bit no matter how hard I beat on it. I'll be closer to the 425 mark this time around, so we'll see how it holds up. It's nice to be able to get on the freeway and only run 2400 RPM at 75mph though.

 

I was thinking of either a 2004r or th400. I want to avoid the 700r4 since its kind of a pain to install and I plan on keeping my rear leaf springs but just maybe getting lowering ones. I can get a built 2004r for like 2000 and around the same for a built 400. I kind of like the option to have that 4th gear though incase I do decide to go on a little cruise or something.

Do you think even a built 2004r would last that long under about 550tq?

 

The installation of a 700R4 or a 2004R should be the same issues, as they are the same tranny, only the 700R4 doesn't have all the computer controls.
My persoanl choice between them would be the TH400, as it's the simplest, and with 3.55 gears it will work fine on the freeway.
If you really want a 4th gear, I'd choose the 700R4 over the 200 for simplicity.

 

ok I'm leaning towards the th400. i mean i should be doing about 3100 rpms at 70mph but i don't plan on driving it much on the freeway.

has anybody had experience with Monster transmissions or art carr transmissions? or i might just get one from TCI

 

3100 at 70 isn't too bad, especially if you aren't going to be doing that very often. But at those times, overdrive would come in handy. As with anything, you can get pretty much what you want, all it takes is money. Here's a 200-4R that will take anything your engine can give it: http://www.cpttransmission.com/catalog.htm
One of the nice things about a 200-4R is it slips right in place of a T350 or T400 without driveshaft length modifications. The 700R4 is a totally different trans from the 200, and it's about 3" longer too. Some people like the 200 over the 700 because it doesn't have such a drastic drop in gearing between the 1-2 shifts. One thing to consider though, the aftermarket is flooded with 700R4 goodies.

 

tci makes a 6speed auto if you got the money .
