Default 4 speed Muncie transmission

Having trouble with the reverse lockout linkage. Linlage is up against the header pipes and can't get into reverse or neutral. What will happen if I remove the back drive rod? This is the rod that is up against the header pipe. Will this effect the shifting, or anything else?

You could modify the linkage rod and or just remove it and use a Hurst backup light switch .Of which I have done .

Can't you just bend the pipe away; Any exhaust shop can fix this in a few minutes.
