I have a new 1980 camaro in a 4 speed. that tranny is it? muncie or saginaw? to put it in reverse you pull it up and down next to 2nd gear. it seems every one i have seen they are down next to 4th gear!

It should be up next to first. Its either a Saginaw or Borg Warner ST 10. If its an aluminum case is a Borg. Probably a Borg anyhow.

If its a borg warner it will have an aluminum case and a iron side cover w/ I believe 9 bolts and the reverse linkage will be in the tail shaft. A Saginaw will have an iron case

#3925656 is a 1968-69 vintage Saginaw. The 9218 would be the cast date: September 21, 1968. http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml#4speed

It can easily handle 350 lbs of torque, which is more than what a small block of your cars vintage puts out. I have even read of guys drag racing with the Saginaw too, so they're not junk just because they're not a Muncie.

the guy i bought the car from said the whole tranny was rebuilt. So is that the only 4 speed that has the reverse down next to 2nd gear?

As far as I'm aware. The only other trans that I know with that pattern is the old 60's style Fords.
