1968 Automatic question
Hi guys new member here just found the site. I have the standard auto shifter in my Camaro. I have a problem with it to get it into drive 3 I have to place it between the 2 and 3 on the indicator . I’m not sure if it’s shifting in to high gear all the time . One of my friends looked at it and said it had to do with the shifter mechanical and nothing to do with the trans. Does this sound right to anyone? I want to add an old school hurst auto shifter and I think if the stock one is causing problems it may be time. Sorry if I sound like a newbie because I am , the car is important because it was my dads and he passed away June 2018 and I’ve almost got the car done . I also have another problem with the speedometer. As I understand it has a cable that runs from the cluster to the trans . I haven’t checked it out but if it’s something that is an easy fix or any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced and if you need any pictures that would help with these problems I’d be happy to add them.
Do you have a TH350 trans?
Your shift linkage may need to be adjusted or worn or your shift detent plate is worn (not likely)
Not sure if the 350 trans was available in 68 but if this was a Power Glide car that had a 350 put in and then the shifter modified to use the 3 speed detent plate (there are kits to do this) maybe the detent plate was attached off slightly
The speedometer cable screws on back of speedo and into the trans rear tail shaft DS of tranny.. If the speedo does not work at all the cable may have broken. If speedo is off mph than the wrong "driven" gear is in tranny. Easy to replace if that is the problem but you would need to use a calculator to determine which gear to get. They are about $10 and easy to install
