Should this be on when the door opens? It flickered while I was removing the console but i dont recall it working previously. With the door open, and the light housing removed, I dont have 12v at the housing connection--I have checked the fuses. Any other spot to check? I assume my next steps are at the door jamb switches? Those should have 12v to one side, correct?
When you say the light flickered while you were removing the console, that almost has to be caused by a broken wire, poor connection in a connector or bad ground. The drawing below shows a wiring diagram for the 1967 console. The orange and white wires go to the console light.
The type of bulb is a 2 end type held on either side of the bulb. Maybe the metal tabs holding it are corroded or no longer holding the bulb securely. The point it flickers suggests there is power to the bulb albeit interruption of that circuit may be upstream of the bulb itself. There is a connector near under the shifter I would check for voltage first. wiggle that connection to see if it is stable if 12v is measured. If dome lights also come on that suggests the door jam button switch is good
Thanks. I have removed the console and carpet for a refurbishment of the console and new carpet. Its a convertible so there are no other interior lights, correct? I checked for voltage at the light but have not had a chance to go further upstream. Wiring diagram is super helpful.
This care was a good friend of mine who sold it to another friend. The current owner is not mechanically inclined so I got roped into some R&R. It is a balancing act as I try not to fall into the trap of project creep but I do have an open check book.
The harness for the console light is all one with the harness with the under dash lights. Sounds like a ground problem which is why it flickered when removing, you most likely grounded it somewhere. If the under dash lights come on when the doors open then you can rule out a fuse. After removing the console you should be able to trace the wires back to the harness The wires should be orange and white. I found it easier to just install a new complete harness with all of the sockets attached then to sit there tracing wires through the dash. They sell a complete set up worked great
