the mds system in the 5.7 liter hemis work ok as far as a mpg gain i think mine gets around 4+ mpg crusing at 55mph or so and only comes on in overdrive. if its like anything like their system which i hope it is. it will work by using different lifters that are controlled my some sylinoidson certain cylinders. basicly the whole computer thing is really a good thing as long as gm releases the code to the aftermarket comunity which they always have. u should be able to turn the mds stuff off with cpu flash but if that dont work u can just but in some new lifters which u will prolly have to do if you ever wanna get a bigger cam/head combo anyway but without the flash will throw a cel. cheapest way out is unplug the sylinoids but i'd rather delet it mechanicly.

agreed, but even for a minor repair, it will and in some cases now, costs huge sums of money for the equipment to decode these things, imagine as they become more prevalent: small shops go out of business, the aftermarket eventually dies, and you are left with a stock car you cant make your own. New vehicles are already nearly impossible to put exhaust on because of O2 sensor problems, and to fix that is very expensive
a brand new factory pcm is around $300 i think. as far as the whole exhaust and o2 sensors thing. the rear o2 is the only one thats throwing codes its fairly cheap to get rid of. u can do it with some handheld tuners (i the diablo has the ablity to dsable it).the onlypurpose of the rear o2's are to make sure the cats are working.if the front sensers are throwing codes its nothing to do with the exhaust unless there is a leak or something becuase they read the a/f raitos and have to be working for the car to run right.

exhaust is one of the things I do at the shop I work at, and when one does custom exhaust, cat free, the sensor causes probs, trust me, had to screw with a truck a week an a half ago because of it

well the whole active cylnder thing should be something to watch eather it's prolly going to be a HUGE success or it's going to flop.....personally I like the idea of haveing DOD. good way to get a 400+hp car to get 25+MPG......
Obviously a whole lot of people don't pay enough attention to what is already going on. I talked to a friend a few days ago, his two year old Corvette LS2 400hp gets 30mpg on the highway, the newer LS3 going into the Vette should do similar. The next generation (gen. 5) engines may do better yet. And as far as modifying engines for more hp/better performance, some of the newer engines from GM have already been pushed to 700+ hp by GMPP. Yes cars get harder to work on, yes it becomes more expensive, but put the blame where it really belongs, the jerks in DC that pass all of the ridiculous laws that the auto manufacturers have to deal with. As long as cars have been made there have been people modifying what the factories put out, I don't expect that to stop anytime soon.

Yes, and a whole lot of other improvements "flopped" or didn't work well when they were first tried, fortunately for us the auto builders kept refineing and improving them until they did work well.

calm down man, I was giving historical background, not saying that would be the case. There could be issues though, like anything electronic, there will be software problems, magnified by the fact that a car is a fairly high heat environment, and extremely cold environment too depending on the surroundings, and electronics do not take well to major changes in temperature

Noob question:
When you say sylinoids, do you mean solenoids? A guy where I work always pronounces it like you spell it. Is it a common mispronunciation that's become a common misspelling? Or is there something else called a sylinoid?

Sorry to interrupt the car argument with a spelling bee....

All it means is that we, the car enthusiasts will have to learn how to work with computer controlled machines. Not really all that hard, trust me, and I am a lot oldrt than most of you. As for the DOD, I bught a 06 Monte Carlo SS with the 5.3L V8 and the DOD works just fine

I agree with you, when they first started putting computer chips in cars everyone declared that it would be the end of independent shops, some that did not keep up with technology did close, but most bought the new equipment needed and trained their people. The last generation or two of people have grown up with computers, etc., I've had to learn a lot of computer related technology in many different areas as I'm approaching sixty years old and computers were foreign to me. All of my music synthesizers (I'm a part time musician) are nothing but computers dedicated to making/playing sound, I run my construction business with the help of a software program to track everything. I'm certainly not going to let a little computer technology dampen my excitement for a new generation of Camaros! z28pete, I'm glad to hear that the DOD works fine on your Monte Carlo SS.
