However, with a little tweaking to accommodate the auto industry’s latest fuel-injection hardware, the prototype V-8 is producing “well north of 450 hp (on gasoline),” says Dave Sczomak, development engineer-GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering.
A modified engine controller manages the engine’s operation, while VVT and Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation contribute to efficiency and refinement.
“GM would want to introduce this (DIG) on a high-profile vehicle, such as the new (Chevrolet) Camaro or (rear-wheel-drive) Impala,” Global Insight analyst John Wolkonowicz

it sounds good, but the new engines are controlled too much by the computer

We have to face the fact that computer chips/modules have been in all cars for quite some time, yes they play an increasing role as time goes on. But there are and will be upgrades as long as cars are being made, how many people are already "re-chipping" cars to gain performance? And these next generation GM engines should have abundant horsepower right from the factory, there should not be much more you need to do to a 450-550HP engine. And yes I know that will always be those that want more than what the factory gives us, I have always done some sort of mods to increase performance, but there should be good aftermarket support to increase the performance of these new GM engines.

agreed, but even for a minor repair, it will and in some cases now, costs huge sums of money for the equipment to decode these things, imagine as they become more prevalent: small shops go out of business, the aftermarket eventually dies, and you are left with a stock car you cant make your own. New vehicles are already nearly impossible to put exhaust on because of O2 sensor problems, and to fix that is very expensive

and just think if something happens to the computer, then your screwed, i dont like the active cylinder thing either, if its an 8 let it run on all 8

i like the idea behind the active BS, but i dont know how it will do. A friend of mine has a 06 silverado, it dont have that. his dad has a new silverado which does. and my friends 06 gets better gas mileage than what the active silverado gets!
Well see how well this does..

well the whole active cylnder thing should be something to watch eather it's prolly going to be a HUGE success or it's going to flop.....personally I like the idea of haveing DOD. good way to get a 400+hp car to get 25+MPG......
